Interact Club
The first Interact (International Action) club in the Northwest Territories has launched at Ecole St. Patrick High School.
Interact is a service club for 14-18 year olds that is one of the strands of the Rotary International family. Clubs are required to do two projects a year. One is to assist the local community and one other to benefit the international community. Interact sponsored by the Rotary Club of Yellowknife, but Interact is self-guided and supported.
Social issue awareness is not something new to our YCS students. Our students have been involved in social justice issues through the Christian Leadership Teams, students at St. Joes have been involved in the annual Christmas can drive for many years, they have raised money to buy wheelchairs and blankets for families in Mexico, and Weledeh Wolves for the World raised funds to build a school in Sri Lanka.
Interact students have already started work, which benefits the community by:
a) assisting the Yellowknife Rotary Club delivering Rotary roses on September 26
b) represented themselves at the schools’ Open House on October 2
c) clean up the school’s beverage containers weekly
d) participated in Jerry Goebel’s community building workshop October 21
e) met weekly to plan community and international projects
f) met with the Yellowknife Rotary Club President and District Governor
g) planned and participated in the Club’s charter night
Interact’s future project's may include:
-
Recycling unused cell phones and PDAs where they will be sent south to a recycling centre. Funds raised from this initiative will support Interact’s campaign to help the homeless in our community this winter. - Working with the Christian Leadership Team to support Canadian Free The Children - Supporting a family through the Salvation Army's Adopt-A-Family program
