Outdoor Pursuits
The purpose of the St. Pat’s Adventure Club is three-fold:
- to provide our students with the opportunity to experience Yellowknife’s incredible natural environment
- to teach them the basic skills that will allow them to safely enjoy the outdoors
- to integrate cultural activities, including language lessons, into our trips so that students develop a knowledge and appreciation of Dene history and culture.
We offer adult-supervised trips in the fall, winter and spring and focus on areas that are within just a few hours of travel from the school.
We provide basic canoe training and run three-day canoe trips in the fall and spring. We have paddled the Yellowknife River, most of the Cameron River and much of Hidden Lake.
For the past two winters we participated in the Bliss Lake Trapper training program organized in collaboration with Environment and Natural Resources. This winter trip involves learning the fundamentals of winter camping as well as the traditional skills of trapping and hide preparation. ENR staff and local elders provide most of the instruction and involve students in monitoring trap lines, setting fish nets under the ice, setting rabbit snares, building quinzees, field-dressing caribou and operating snowmobiles.
Other winter activities under consideration are cross country skiing and dog sledding.
