CTS/Exploratories
The CTS/Exploratories is available to all Middle School students (grades 7 & 8). This program offers a wide variety of courses which allow students to experience different areas of learning. CTS accredited courses (Career Technology Studies) provide the opportunity for grade 7 and 8 to earn highschool credits. Exploratories/CTS sessions last twelve weeks and rotate three times a year. Computer Operations and Workplace Safety for the Young Worker are mandatory programs for all students in grade 8. Other courses/choices may include: Tole Painting; Northern Arts; Men's Work; Imovie; and, Physical Activity courses. Other exploratories and CTS courses will be offered during one of the three terms. Students will register in the spring of the year for fall courses. New students will register when they arrive.
Fine Arts Exploratories
Middle School students will choose between a group of Fine Arts courses for study throughout the year. Students who choose Band will stay in Band throughout the year. Other students will rotate through 2 different Fine Arts exploratories that they may choose. These exploratories may include: Drama, Music, Choir, Music Appreciation, Art, Dene Drumming and other courses.
Band
Weledeh offers a full band program to all Middle School students.
It is compulsory for all grade 6 students to participate in band
for the first year. Grade 7 and 8 students have the opportunity
to access band through the Fine Arts program.
Single Sex Instruction-- Middle School
In 2005-06 Weledeh began using Single Sex groupings for instruction in Middle School for Math and Language Arts. As there have been positive learning results for the students in these single sex classes, we will continue to offer them in the 2009-2010 school year for both grades 7 & 8. Homeroom classes and all other subjects continue to be taught in mixed gender groups.
Middle School Leadership Councils & Wolf Pac
Students in middle school meet for 1 period weekly in Leadership Councils or Wolf Pac. Leadership councils deal with planning activities and taking on leadership roles in a variety of ways including: student council, public relations, cultural activities, film, Positive Behaviour Systems and Faith.
Second Step
A violence-prevention course that is designed to help children learn pro-social skills and reduce impulsive-aggresive behaviour. Students talk about what bullying is and how to handle situations in which they may encounter either being bullied or being a bully.
D.A.R.E
Drug Abuse Research Education, this program is offered through coordination between the school and the RCMP. Grade six students participate in a drug awareness program which better equip them to deal with difficult situations and making choices.
Fine Arts
Grade 7 and 8 students have the opportunity to take Fine Arts throughout the year. Fine Arts is offered on a semestered basis, allowing students to take 2 different Fine Arts unless band is one of their choices. Please see Band for more information.
School Extra-curricular Activities and Clubs:
Toys for recess: provides items for students to use during playground times and allow students to play and share together.
School Theme Days: provide an opportunity for students to participate in a fun, celebratory day as an entire school.
Track and Field Day: annual sports event day held at Fritz Thiel Park in which all students come together to enjoy a day of track and field activities to celebrate the conclusion of a successful school year.
Geography and Math Challenge: students participate in a Canadian wide contest focusing on the area of math or geography.
Out-of-Town Travel: Some years teachers make a decision to sponsor either an out of town or out of territory trip centred around various learning experiences. These trips may be organized for a class, or for a grade grouping of students who then choose to take part in the trip or not as a personal choice.
Middle School Retreat: middle school students come together on a day long retreat which provides opportunity to bond as a learning community and reflect upon the meaning of community.
Spiritual Retreats: students in grade 5-8 will take part in a religious retreat during the course of the school year. This retreat allows the students to reflect on faith and their relationship with God.
Grade One Rotary Healthy Snack Program: through a partnership with the Yellowknife Rotary Club, grade one students are provided a healthy snack prior to morning recess in order to ensure they have an optimum learning experience.
Rotary Reading Buddy Mentorship Program: grade one students are partnered up with a reading buddy who will come in and share a book with them on a weekly basis.
Parish Masses and Liturgies: twice a year the school participates in the weekly mass at St. Patrick’s Parish. In addition to this Weledeh enjoys three school wide liturgies a year, divisional liturgies on a monthly basis, and daily and weekly classroom liturgies. The students also participate in mini Advent and Lent liturgies during the Advent and Lenten periods.
Middle School Wolfpack Meetings: brings middle school students together weekly in celebration of their middle school community. Individual students are recognized by homeroom teachers for personal accomplishments.
Middle School and PAC Family Dances: students come together to enjoy an afternoon or evening of music and fun either as a middle school community or as a school community.
Interdivisional Reading Buddies: students in the older grades become reading buddies and role models for students in the younger grades. Time is spent reading and enjoying books together.
Celebrating Student Success Days: students meeting the expectations of successful students, including good attendance, completion of assigned work and meeting behaviour expectations, are invited to celebrate a successful term. Students not taking part in CSS follow a regular school day.
Sports Events: extra-curricular sports programs which culminate in tournament events such as: William MacDonald Invitational Badminton Tournament, Spike-It Volleyball Tournament, Jr. Cager Basketball Tournament, Super Soccer Tournament, Yellowknife Midnight Sun Track and Field Meet and Hay River Territorial Track and Field Invitational.
School Spirit Pep Rallies: Weledeh Catholic Students come together to celebrate their learning community together.
Halloween Spectacular: students celebrate the Halloween season with activities, cake walks and costume parades.
School Wide Book Fairs: through the library and the promotion of literacy, book fairs allow students and families to purchase and enjoy books and literacy together.
Christmas Concert and Parade: as a school Weledeh produces a fun, welcoming and family orientated Christmas concert and participates in the Yellowknife Christmas Parade.
Library Club: students join the library club to help out and to learn more about books and how to use the library.
Science Fair: students create a science fair project and display it at the school wide science fair and perhaps city and territorial fairs. This event takes place every two years.
Public Speaking: students prepare and practice speeches and participate in a public speaking event in which all students are given the opportunity to show their skills as speakers. This event takes place every two years.
Middle School Canoe Trip: students, along with chaperones, have participated in a two day canoe trip along the Ingraham Trail. It is quite possible this trip will take place again this year.
