Superintendent's Message
May 2026
Dear YCS Families,
As we embrace the vibrant energy of spring in Yellowknife, our schools are buzzing with activity, achievement, and a deep sense of community. This month, we are guided by our spiritual focus from 1 Corinthians 13:13, which reminds us that faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. In every hallway and classroom, we see this scripture come to life through our Vision of Learning. Whether it is through the grit shown on the soccer pitch or the quiet reflection during the Sacrament of Confirmation, our students are actively living out our four core priorities: Academic Integrity, Indigenous Perspective, Valuing Diversity, and Faith and Spirituality.
The transition from April into May has been marked by incredible athletic energy. We offer a massive congratulations to all our athletes who participated in Junior Super Soccer from April 22 to 26, and to our older students who competed in the Senior Super Soccer tournament this past weekend. These tournaments are a wonderful display of sportsmanship and school spirit, providing a platform for our youth to build character and community.
As we move further into the month, we prepare for a season of gratitude and spiritual growth. May 4 to 8 marks Teacher Appreciation Week, a time to recognize our educators who are the heart of our district, tirelessly weaving faith and knowledge into the lives of our children. This lead up brings us to Catholic Education Week from May 9 to 15, where we join schools across the country to celebrate our unique gift of faith-based learning. A central highlight of this week is the Sacrament of Confirmation celebration on May 9, where our young people affirm their commitment to the Holy Spirit.
Our commitment to continuous improvement and cultural connection remains at the forefront of our operations this month. We are pleased to welcome Kurtis and Lorna Hewson to our district on May 13 and 14 to support our collaborative systems, followed by a visit from Katie White on May 27 to focus on academic integrity and assessment. Our connection to the land and community is equally celebrated through the Weledeh Catholic School Feast on May 14 and the Trustee visit to the Junior Kindergarten On-the-Land program on May 27. We also look forward to the Board of Trustees observing the ESJS Multi-Sport program on May 5, which highlights our dedication to valuing diversity and wellness.
Finally, we look toward significant milestones for our students and their families. We are excited to celebrate our graduating seniors during the ESPHS graduation events from May 21-23, marking the culmination of their hard work and perseverance. For those just beginning their journey, the Weledeh Catholic School Junior Kindergarten Open House on May 23 offers a warm welcome to our newest learners. As we move toward the end of the school year, let us remember that while we strive for excellence in all things, it is the love we show one another that truly defines us as a Catholic school community.
God bless,
Adam Murray
