New Pope Leo XIV
Earlier today, white smoke rose above the Sistine Chapel, the signal that cardinals had chosen a new pope on the second day of the conclave. The cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church elected Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost who will take the name Pope Leo XIV. He appeared on the balcony of St Peter's Basilica after he was chosen as the 267th person to hold the role of pope. Born in Chicago to a family with Italian, French, and Spanish roots, Pope Leo XIV is the first American pope.
Bishop Jon shared the following on the selection of the new Pope:
It is with great joy that I share the wonderful news of the election of our new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV. As the Vicar of Christ on earth and the successor to Saint Peter, Pope Leo XIV now leads our Church with a shepherd’s heart, calling us all to deeper faith and unity.
I encourage all of you to pray for our new Holy Father in your classrooms and school liturgies. May he be blessed with wisdom, courage, and compassion as he begins this sacred mission. Let his example inspire all of us to live with integrity, serve with joy, and love without limits.
May God bless you and keep you always in His care.
In Christ,
Bishop Jon
